WHAT happened to the American dream?" William Faulkner has asked us. "We dozed, and it abandoned us. And in that vacuum now there sound no longer the strong loud voices ... unafraid." Instead we hear only what Faulkner calls mouth-sounds, "empty words which we have emasculated of all meaning whatever," empty symbols which tell us that we no longer know what it is we mean to ourselves or who we really are.
"Excelsior," the banner with the strange device, has been struck. "Please Do Not Disturb" now labels our flagging spirit.
Through our symbols, those mixtures of piety and fraud to which we have become so inured, we are training ourselves to stop at the surface of things and leave the fundamental issues of our society untouched. We have abandoned the practice of making frontal assaults on the fortress of self-knowledge. We are even reluctant to ferret out symbolic short-cuts to learning the truth about ourselves. Instead, our time and energies are consumed
in searching for symbolic bypasses around the critical aspects of our society which might otherwise, as they deserve to do, claim our leisure. We are a society in detour. Neither in favor of very much nor against very much, we are mostly just going through life together. And so conditioned have we become to accepting the symbol for the substance, the bypass for the thoroughfare, that most of us care neither to notice nor object to the deceptions we are practicing on ourselves in the name of self-revelation.
Yet of all the influences that shape men, none are more powerful than the symbolic images of ourselves we carry in our heads and advertise abroad. For it is how we see ourselves as a nation that determines to a large extent how we respond to challenge and even what sorts of challenge others contrive to hurl against us. Antagonists from right to left along the political spectrum have lately made a game of mocking us quite openly about our loss of vigor and purpose. For they know that it is not by accident that an age which has made a fetish of security in place of adventure and which has put a premium on the technique of salesmanship rather than the strategy of leadership has been ineffectual in forwarding the American dream.
"The harsh facts of the matter are that we have gone soft: physically, mentally, spiritually soft," our salesmen-leaders and would-be leaders preach to us. "We are in danger of losing our will to fight, to sacrifice, to endure. The slow corrosion of luxury is already beginning to show." Bejeweled and tuxedoed, we nod solemnly through the familiarity of it all without seeing beyond personal prosperity to national purpose.
With the sweep and quality of our prosperity, we have indeed achieved what the President's annual economic report for 1959 called "The Diffusion of Well Being." Yet in dealing most effectively with the unique largesse of this blissful state, we suffer as much from confusion as we gain from diffusion. Perhaps we suffer even more.
In 1959, Look commissioned the Institute of Public Opinion to conduct a nationwide survey, after the fashion of our times, of "the mood of America today." The first thing that must be said, Look concluded, is that "Most Americans today are relaxed, unadventurous, comfortably satisfied with their way of life and blandly optimistic about the future. In an exciting age, they yearn for continued tranquillity." Honesty, Look found, is receiving less and less consideration as a prime requisite for success. Saying the Tight things is far more serviceable.
