FOR some years now," Diana Trilling has written, "the American woman has been under persistent attack as the cause of the major ills of modern American life. She is blamed for the marked decline in masculine self-esteem and for the nervous tension that seems to characterize both men and women. The instability of the modern home, the rise in juvenile delinquency and male homosexuality, even the alarming incidence of heart disease among American men —all of these are blamed on the American woman's distortion of her traditional female role."
Specifically, the Trilling analysis goes on, the American woman in her role as wife is accused of using the pretense of equality to
displace her husband as head of the family, thereby reversing the established order of male sexual dominance and female passivity. She is said to have subdued our sturdy pioneer spirit of self-reliance. Around a latticework of her own design, she is blamed for weaving an insurgent conformity which has entwined itself like a poisonous ivy about free enterprise.
In her role as mother, the American woman is often indicted for seducing her sons into inseparably clinging "momists" by extracting all semblance of male backbone from their un-protesting forms with the same skill which her grandmother once used to fillet a fish. In her rearing of girls, she is brought to book for teaching them to believe that femininity has value only as a coercive tool. As a consequence, sexuality becomes theirs to induce or forbid entirely at their own will and circumstance.
And finally, outside the home, the American woman is charged with invading the economic province of men and winning success over them on their own ground by making a virtue of her womanly gender without making womanly gender virtuous. As New York Journal-American columnist Phyllis Battelle has said, the American female is the "lovely and adored princess who has, all too suddenly, become queen of the realm." And after the fashion in which singer Eddie Fisher is pleased to refer to his marriage to Elizabeth Taylor —the girl who once declared she had the mind of a child in the body of a woman — the American woman and her man have become for us of midcentury "the Princess and Her Love Slave."
Today's Princess is the plutocrat of the world. She is its largest single owner, the largest single spender, and largest single stockholder. She owns seventy per cent of America's private wealth, two thirds of all privately owned government bonds, another two thirds of all savings accounts, and —being a gambler at heart — most of the nation's best thoroughbred race horses. Simply
by outliving their Love Slaves, which they do up to an average of six years, women are increasing their wealth every day as the principal beneficiaries of men's estates, insurance, and social security.
